The Short Version

OldWeather 8 does not collect, store, or share any personal data. Your location is used only on your device to fetch local weather from the National Weather Service. Nothing leaves your device to our servers — because we don't have any.

1. Overview

This Privacy Policy describes how OldWeather 8 ("the app," "we," "our") handles information when you use the app on Apple TV. OldWeather 8 is developed and maintained by Kassim Rasoulian.

We are committed to protecting your privacy. OldWeather 8 is designed as a simple, read-only weather display app. We do not operate servers that receive, store, or process your personal information.

2. Information We Do Not Collect

OldWeather 8 does not collect any of the following:

  • Personal identifiers (name, email address, Apple ID)
  • Location history or precise GPS coordinates stored anywhere
  • Usage analytics or behavioral data
  • Device identifiers, advertising IDs, or fingerprints
  • Crash reports sent to our servers
  • Purchase or payment information
  • Contacts, photos, or any other device data

There are no accounts, no logins, and no user profiles associated with OldWeather 8.

3. Location Information

OldWeather 8 uses your approximate location to retrieve local weather data from the National Weather Service (NWS). Here is exactly how it works:

  • On first launch, the app attempts to determine your location using your WiFi network via the Apple TV's network-based location services.
  • If automatic detection is unavailable, you may manually enter a city name or ZIP code.
  • Your location coordinates are used solely to make outbound requests to the NWS API and to display a map tile for the radar slide.
  • Location data is never transmitted to Kassim Rasoulian or any server we control.
  • Location data is stored locally on your device using Apple's standard app preferences so the app remembers your location between launches. You can change or reset it in Settings at any time.

4. Third-Party Services

OldWeather 8 makes outbound network requests to the following third-party services to fetch weather data. These services are called directly from your device; your request may include your IP address and approximate location as part of a standard API call.

National Weather Service (NWS)

api.weather.gov — provides current conditions, hourly data, extended forecast, and active weather alerts. Operated by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Privacy policy.

ArcGIS Geocoding (Esri)

geocode.arcgis.com — converts city names or ZIP codes into latitude/longitude coordinates. Used only when you manually enter a location. Privacy policy.

Iowa State Mesonet (IEM)

mesonet.agron.iastate.edu — provides archived NEXRAD radar frames for the animated radar slide. Operated by Iowa State University. Contact info.

Apple MapKit

Used to render the map background on the Radar slide. Subject to Apple's privacy policy. Apple privacy policy.

We do not control how these third-party services handle data. We encourage you to review their respective privacy policies for more information.

5. Analytics and Tracking

OldWeather 8 contains no third-party analytics SDKs, no advertising networks, and no tracking pixels. We do not use any tools such as Firebase, Mixpanel, Amplitude, or similar services.

Apple may collect anonymized, aggregated App Store metrics (such as install counts and crash logs) as part of the standard tvOS platform. This data is subject to Apple's privacy policy and is not accessible to us in any personally identifiable form.

6. Children's Privacy

OldWeather 8 does not collect any personal information from anyone, including children under the age of 13. The app is a passive weather display with no registration, accounts, or user input beyond a location entry. It is fully compliant with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) by virtue of collecting no data whatsoever.

7. Data Security

Because OldWeather 8 does not transmit personal data to any servers we operate, there is no server-side data to secure on our end. Any preferences stored locally on your Apple TV (such as your saved location, volume settings, and display preferences) are managed by the Apple tvOS operating system and subject to Apple's device security model.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the effective date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Continued use of the app after any changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
